Achilleion Palace
a fairytale venue
Achilleion Palace
... a unique, fairytale venue at European level
The legend says…
“There, where your imagination is free to run wild, the fairy tale becomes one with reality; good, evil and even the truth become one with the legend. A strange sense of awe overwhelms anyone that gazes over the imposing form of the Palace which dominates the area with its presence, residing between the cypress trees and other exotic plants and flowers which surround it.”
Achilleion is undoubtedly one of the most famous and important sights in Corfu, located in the village Gastouri, 9 kilometers far from Corfu town.
Achilleion was built in the 19th century at the behest of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as Sissy.
Achilleion is a neoclassical residence, built in a verdant area and renowned for its magnificent gardens, which are adorned with exotic flowers, palms and an abundance of centuries-old trees.
The most impressive element is the statues that adorn the palace. At the entrance of the palace, those of the Olympian gods are the ones that stand out.
What is also impressive is the Peristyle of the 9 Muses, along with a lovely garden with many archaic statues.
